How to verify a WhatsApp voice message

A cloned voice note from a 'family member' asking for money is a common scam. What to listen for, what to do first, and how to check the recording.

A voice note from your son, your boss or your bank sounds urgent and familiar. Today, a few seconds of someone's voice from social media is enough to clone it. Voice notes are an easy vehicle because they're short and you can't interrupt them.

Do this first

  1. Don't reply with money or codes. No real emergency requires a gift card or a one-time code.
  2. Call back on a number you already have. Not the number that sent the message.
  3. Ask something only they would know, or agree a family code word in advance.

What to listen for

  • Flat emotion that doesn't match the urgency of the words.
  • No breathing, no background noise, or background noise that loops.
  • Odd pronunciation of names and places.
  • A message that's oddly short and avoids small talk.

Check the recording

On WhatsApp, long-press the voice note, share or export it, and upload the file to the checker below or our voice note checker. With the VerifyAI app on your phone, you can use the Share button instead. The AI review looks for synthetic speech patterns and tells you why it reached its verdict.

Compressed voice notes are harder to judge than studio audio, so treat a "review" result as a reason to call back — not as an all-clear. More detail in our guide on detecting AI voice clones.
